Tucker was born and raised in Montana. He grew up learning to appreciate the world through slow mornings and hikes that ended in the dark. After graduating from the University of Montana with a degree in molecular biology, he spent two years at the NIH in Maryland, studying hearing loss. “This is just not what I want,” he thought often while living on the east coast, and at the end of his two year NIH fellowship he returned to his roots, finding work as a mule packer. For the next three summer and fall seasons, he packed mules in the wilderness areas of California, Montana, and Idaho. During the intervening winters, Tucker made his way up to Alaska where he worked as a handler for Ryne Olson. The same summer Tucker and Sam bought their cabin, he started working for the Alaska Fire Service as a Hotshot on the Midnight Suns. While Tucker likes running sled dogs he likes running alongside sled dogs more.
